e-curriculum

JSLP is currently developing an e-curriculum for distribution from this site. The e-curriculum uses the stories and accomplishments of past leaders in creating lessons in social justice, civics, history, art, and culture. The use of technology broadens the potential audience and increases the possibility of engaging today’s students. The e-curriculum will have a service learning component, as well as layers of instructions making each lesson suitable for multiple-aged students, with the background material and full interviews available to researchers. We hope to impact students of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. By learning the stories of ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things, we will demonstrate to young people that they, too, are capable of making an impact in the world.

Significant people from the 1940s to the 1990s played important roles in fighting for social justice for all Americans. Their stories are in danger of being lost, and indeed, some have been lost forever. JSLP has identified and contacted many of these valiant Americans who have agreed to tell their stories. The Oral Histories along with the archived papers provide the raw material for the e-curriculum. The project is significant to New Mexico and the nation because leaders of color who are in danger of being forgotten will become more widely known to educators and their students, providing role models for a new generationBy enlightening youth about the historical role these people played, the project intends to deepen the fund of American heroes from which to draw inspiration. The curriculum is designed to positively influence young people and to ensure that the accomplishments of the leaders of the past will serve to inspire a new generation of students who need to believe in themselves, build their identities, and have faith in their future. The exercises involving family and community will benefit the greater public as students interact with their elders and other community members. In addition, the e-curriculum aids teachers by allowing access to new pedagogical strategies, and to previously unavailable teaching tools and materials.
